I really wanted to like this book...really...but I didn't. It was almost like two different books put together:

The first 3/4 of the book was slow and gloomy where the characters were introduced. Though there was some background, I still didn't get a feeling for any of the characters except for the little bit of craziness that was the protagonist. I didn't get a feeling for his wife, the neighbor girl, or the long lost love. And the actions of the main character were kinda' mind boggling - I couldn't relate at all.

The last 1/4 of the book was fast-paced and may have made a nice short story in itself with a few changes. If the latter part of the novel were interwoven with the former, the book as a whole would have been more enjoyable and the pace may have made more sense than "snooze" and then "pow."

I did enjoy certain scenes in which the author was enjoyably descriptive, "Because what makes `em haunted ain't just in the walls and the floors and the dark rooms at night. It's in us. All the pity and rage and sadness and hot blood we carry around. The house might be where it lives, but the human heart is the key."

These descriptive scenes, though, also had their opposite in minimalism, "In the car, her scent. Like she had spilled vanilla extract on her shirt. Made him think of ice cream. Milkshake girl. It was going to be a long ride." I'm sorry, but short choppy sentences not a paragraph make.

Unfortunately, not just a long ride, but a long read.

Love it
A good read.
Not as terrifying as I thought. Excellent condition when received
This book is hard to follow and kind of confusing. I don't recommend this book. Allot of racey material not for all audiences.
When I started reading this book I was blown away at the original take on horror. We often think of death bringing ghosts and leaving souls behind, but we never really think of birth doing the same. This was one of the best books I have read all year. The only gripe I have about this novel is that the ending seemed rushed. I feel as though if this book would have developed into its ending building more suspense this may have been the best book I have ever read. This is the only book that I have ever read that had me looking around more when reading in the dark ( case with light). I just wish his other books (The Haunting of James Hastings, The People Next Door) were available in the kindle format in the United States. I bought a copy of "Haunting of James Hastings" and am looking forward to more Ransom brilliance. Keep up the Good Work!
It's a great book. Keeps you guessing up to the end. I fully recomend it to a everyone. Very well y.
This book is about a "haunted" house- - supposedly. About 2/3 of the bk. is fairly interesting, then it goes into outer space. Think of Stephen King & Dean Koontze mixing up a story. The author does a good job at first, plenty of odd things happen, then he goes ??? Basic story is good- - family moves from Cal. to small town in Con. into old home, amidst strange noises. House has power, but one wonders if it the ghost house, or the main character that is unhinged? If you like descriptions of mind bending journeys, this may be for you. Not for me.
