Melinda Leigh has a formula: Woman threatened, woman assesses threat, woman kicks ass. Or at least that's what I thought. Not that I minded. I'm not into reading about helpless characters. Leigh also is a master of creating masterful antagonists. In the past novels I've read, these are some of the slimiest scumbags ever. They're also powerful and smart, to some degree. Difficult to vanquish. In "She Can Kill," Leigh changes it up a bit. She made her protagonist a guy, Cristan Rojas, a former killer who worked for a Latin gunrunner. He had to disappear from his former life to raise his baby daughter. But time caught up with him and so did the people chasing him. Meanwhile, he's met a woman. They're not lovers, but they could be. She's got her own problems, the chief being her idiot ex-husband who won't let her go. Leigh's talent as a writer is making all her characters relatable. She's an astute observer of human nature. Her description of Sarah Mitchell, the potential love interest, is quite compelling. Sarah is more than a victim. She's a mom with a lot of character and enough drive to change her story. She got out of a destructive marriage and wants to make a go of it on her own. She has support, but Leigh makes it real. They can only do so much. The person has to be the one to make the change. Rojas gets into trouble. A couple of guys target him during a robbery, and he's canny enough to realize it may be related to his former life. He stops the robbers but reveals himself. His daughter, however, doesn't want to move. And that's the logical thing to do. He's been discovered. He may be targeted for death. But his daughter convinces him to stay. It means taking a stand despite the consequences. Leigh brings all of this to an intense confrontation while juggling Sarah's sideplot. It's one of her best yet. Leigh is a master of the thriller with that little bit of fleeting romance.

Finally, the mysterious Cristan Rojas gets his story! We first meet him in “She Can Tell,” he is a serious, somewhat stern single father to a young teen girl. taking horseriding lessons from the heroine of that book, Rachel. Tall, dark and handsome, the reader could sense there was more to the wealthy Argentinian. And the glances he would exchange with Rachel’s sister, Sarah, left me wanting more!
Well, we now get that “more”, with Cristan’s backstory….. and it is intense! A poor street urchin taken in by an evil arms dealer, Christopher Navarro rises through the ranks, marries the daughter and becomes an expert assassin. However, once baby Luciana arrives, Christopher is determined to convince his wife to leave the “family business” behind and live a quiet, normal life. When things explode in more ways than one, Christopher flees with Luciana. Twelve years later, “Cristan” and “Lucia” are living in rural Westbury, Pennsylvania. But Cristan knows his sins, and enemies, of past can catch up with him. Cristan can sense the threat closing in…...
As the same time, Sarah Mitchell has divorced her bullying husband and is attempting to raise her two precious little girls in a safe, peaceful environment. But the abusive Troy is determined to destroy Sarah’s hope for the future. Once Troy gets unsupervised visitation with the girls, Sarah’s chance at a normal life seems a distant dream. Yet in the midst of the drama, attraction between Sarah and Cristan sparks and catches fire! Cristan’s determination to be a better man despite his past, and Sarah’s determination to be a stronger woman despite her prior choices, has the reader rooting for these two to have their HEA.
“She Can Kill” is an amazing, well-written, fast-paced edge-of-your-seat romantic suspense read that I will devour over and over again. From the opening chapter to the end, I was hanging on through every twist and turn of the ride! Just when I thought I knew who was the villain…...well, call me surprised! I also enjoyed that the characters from the prior “She Can” books reappear; Mike and Rachel are favorites! I cannot recommend this book, and series, enough!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Melinda Leigh’s books all seem to follow the same formula, although this final one in the series was probably the best of the 6
1. Strong, fierce, independent woman ends up in jeopardy in spite of her strength, fierceness, and independence
2. Strong, handsome man enters the picture
3. The two people have never experienced such attraction to another and fall in love in less than a week
4. The man becomes obsessed with protecting the woman in jeopardy and saves her at the last minute
5. They live happily ever after
I honestly don’t know how the author continues to get these books published or why I have kept reading them. Oh wait, it’s because I bought a bunch at one time at a cheaper price and now feel compelled to read them because I paid for them.
It’s not that she’s a bad writer. She just tells the same story over and over again. There is no originality to her story telling. She also comes across to me as a bit misogynistic with these women in jeopardy books.
Cristan Rojas has been on the run for 12 years. He is a reformed assassin but all he wants to do is live a quiet life with his daughter. He has been in Westbury, Pa for too long. His daughter has friends and it would be hard to uproot her. Some very deadly people would like to find them and Cristan suspects they may have found him. Sarah Mitchell is trying to raise her 2 young daughters after a nasty divorce from her abusive ex husband. Cristan and Sarah become friend and are attracted to each other. Sarah's ex doesn't like this and becomes increasingly violent and unstable. Sarah also becomes a target of the people after Cristan because of her connection to him. To protect his daughter and Sarah, Cristan must look to his past and risk everything. Does he go it alone or can he trust the local law to help. I loved the characters and their interactions. As usual Melinda does an excellent job keeping you guessing on the suspense. An excellent romantic suspense novel you can't go wrong
