I did not like the duchessina as a person in this story. I could not relate to her because her thought process is different from mine. However, I will say that Carolyn Meyer is an expert at giving voice to unique characters; previous books have had entirely different characters with whom I could relate very well. All things considered, it was the person she wrote that I did not like, and not the writing or writer. I did very much like the ebb and flow of the story over all.

This was an amazing story! You feel the angst and desperation of Catherine and desperately want her to triumph. I was saddened when the book was finished and wanted it to keep going. We visited her castle in France, and because of this book, felt as if we were connected to her some how as we were in her chambers. The author did an amazing job!!
Great historical fiction. I love these books. Meyer takes figures out of obscurity and gives them flesh and bones.
It is a great book. I would recommend to around 9 and up and those who like history. If you are interested in the Medicis this book is for you.
Carolyn Meyer is an amazing author highly recommend
I love the princess line of stories, but having read many of them, I would never want their life! Remember this mixes fiction with history. A jumping off poit to learn more.
This book, although fiction, contains much historical value. I will not into detail, but instead encourage you to read it for yourself.
I decided to read this story after reading Meyer's four novels about the Tudor women. What a life, "la duchessina" lived. I had no idea the Popes were so involved in politics back then as they are today. I was very impressed in the way Carolyn Meyer put herself in the mind state of Catherine de'Medici and was able to write Catherine was surely feeling. She was bravest woman of her family because she faced her fears and never did she give up!
